School Overview
Our Mission

Dover Elearning is an online language school launched in January 2009. The school’s mission is to teach the English language to the world by developing the most effective and enjoyable internet based school possible. Dover offers a true alternative to the traditional classroom by ensuring that its elearning solution has rich and varied content, by developing a strong student community, and by consistently measuring the success of its program through the success of its students in achieving their personal goals and standardized tests. "Content. Community. Success." These three cornerstones comprise both the motto and the mission of Dover Elearning.

The Challenge

“Learn Anytime” “Learn Anywhere” These are just two of the benefits of elearning over the traditional classroom. Additionally, elearning ensures content consistency and lowers educational costs for companies. It is for these reasons that we have seen an explosion in the popularity of elearning systems since the concept’s birth in the mid 90’s. The problem with teaching English with an elearning system is that language is a multifaceted discipline and most of its components are quite subjective. The challenge of teaching a language on the internet is the challenge that Dover Elearning has met. Through the use of valuable tools like our online sound recorder, students can actually get feedback on subjective skills like speaking and pronunciation. Every skill set from listening to writing from reading to speaking is handled in a way that at least matches and, in some cases, surpasses the methodology used in face-to-face instruction.

The Approach

We all know that the best way to learn a language is to immerse oneself in it. Ideally, this means living in different country or at least surrounding yourself with foreign friends. Unlike a traditional classroom, focused on grammar rules and other objective goals, Dover Elearning was built around this idea of cultural immersion. All of the content is real world examples that demonstrate the way native English speakers really use their language. In every unit, students are asked to participate and interact with the content. Students must successfully listen, write, speak and read in order to progress to the next unit. Dover Elearning system does teach grammar, but developing the more practical skill by immersing students into a world of rich English content takes president.

Students are also immersed in a bustling student community. One of the great things about enrolling in a university is the fact that you are not alone, but part of something bigger. This “something” is always changing and evolving as students and teachers work together to make a better home for themselves. It is this special feeling of community that Dover Elearning strives to achieve. Students are encouraged to chat and make friends, to help each other learn, to challenge each others to English language games, to form study groups, and even to make the school better by contributing valuable content and ideas.

What Dover Elearning Is Not

Dover is not one of the many websites that purports to be an “elearning” website. During the past 18 months of developing Dover Elearning, our team studied many websites that claim to teach English. Consistently, we found websites that had weak content, weak technology solutions, and appeared to be only interested in making money. Here are some of our findings: Some systems use Skype to arrange conversations with English teachers. Some systems email course material to be completed and emailed back for scoring. Many systems present a small bit of content and then ask a few multiple choice questions, but never any complex exercises that require a real person to review. Elearning is more than an email exchange or conversation with a native speaker. Elearning is more than a few multiple choice questions graded by the computer. Dover Elearning has built a real virtual university with real teachers, real students, and real course material that took over a year to develop for each course. And remember, the main tenants of elearning are “anywhere” and “anytime”. You shouldn’t have to make an appointment to be scored on your pronunciation!

Courseware

Although Dover Elearning is a robust system with many features, obviously, the most important is the courseware or content. Let’s take a moment to discuss the way that the content is organized and presented. Each core course like “Intermediate English” is comprised of 30 units of content. Specialized courses have far fewer units. Each unit is comprised of lessons, grammar, writing, speaking, reading, vocabulary and testing. Students must complete all of the work in these areas before they can take the unit’s final test. If they pass the test, then they can proceed to the next unit. Each unit will take the average student about 8 hours to complete. This figure means that a course is packed with about 240 hours of work!

Additionally, each unit has its own theme. So, if a unit is all about “Food” then each lessons within that unit will address different aspects about food like: cooking, dining out, table manners, recipes, etc. Similarly, the other sections (like writing and speaking) within the unit will also revolve around the theme of food. Lessons are presented in audio, video, and text mediums.

Each unit concludes with a test over the concepts learned in the unit and every 10th unit is a review unit that reviews and tests everything learned in the previous units. It is important to note that grammar is just a small part of what is presented and learned in the course. The school’s primary goal is teach English by immersing the student in an environment where they must successfully use the language to succeed.

Getting Help

Dover Elearning provides a graduated help system. Students start by searching the help database for an answer to their question. If this doesn’t work then students can submit their question to a teacher. The teacher will send an answer back to the student via the messaging system. The question and answer will also be added to the help database for future use. If issue is unable to be resolved via the message system, then the teacher and student can discuss things in a private chatroom. There is also a help messageboard where students can post issues or questions for other students to address.

Payment

Just as Dover Elearning has taken a unique approach to teaching English, the school also uses a unique way to charge tuition. Instead of asking for a flat fee for the course, students purchase credits called “Dover Credits”. As students use the system, their credits are consumed similarly to the way an automobile consumes gasoline. When a student runs out of Dover Credits they must buy more to continue using the system. Not every activity in Dover Elearning uses credits at the same rate. Prime content like the unit lessons use more credit or cost more than simply chatting with a friend in one of the school’s chatrooms. Students also have the ability to pause the system and stop any billing should they need to take a break or answer a phone call. The system will automatically log a student out if he/she is inactive for more than a few minutes.

The minimum amount of credit that can be purchased is the amount necessary to complete 5 units within a course. Since the amount of time necessary to complete a unit varies from student to student, Dover Elearning has based the credit amount on the time required for a slightly slower than average student to complete the work. The credits given will be enough for one student to comfortably use the system, but not enough for two people to share one account.

Here’s the great news: Dover Elearning rewards students with Dover Credits. Students who contribute to the system or stand out in other ways are actually compensated with Dover Credits. There are many fun ways to earn Dover Credits including submitting English jokes, being a champion of the English games, or even submitting useful study material. The more you participate and contribute to the Dover Elearning community, the more Dover Credits you will earn.
